Suffering from low self-worth is always a serious matter that desperately needs addressing. Nobody should be left to feel as if they do not matter, after all, we are all more alike than we are different. If your self-worth is low because of not looking a certain way or due to an unfavorable situation, it is time to take action and recognize that we are all worthy of so much more.

Increasing your self-worth may seem like a daunting challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. We have some advice that will help to shift the outlook you have on yourself in the right direction.

How to Start Feeling Your Self-Worth

Use Positive Affirmations

Giving yourself positive affirmations is a great tool for raising your confidence. If your self-worth is at an all-time low, then give yourself affirmations that seem reasonable to you.

For example, instead of telling yourself “I am going to be a great success!”, maybe try, “I am going to persevere until I succeed!”.

Tweaking the affirmation to the latter helps to make it more of a believable statement, especially if you are really feeling down.

We suggest that you either journal or post these affirmations somewhere where you can physically look at them and be reminded of the self-worth goals that you are setting for yourself.

Identify Your Strengths

This is a simple, yet effective tip that you can use to your advantage, especially if you are lacking a feeling of self-worth. For most of us, our self-worth and self-esteem are built upon demonstrating real ability and success in areas of our lives that matter to us. In other words, find whatever you know yourself to be excellent at.

If you are a great chef, take the time to throw some great dinner parties, or if you are a runner, sign up for races or go for more runs. If you can, try to make a career out of whatever it is that makes you feel good.

Doing things that we know ourselves to be talented at helps to make us feel better and boost our self-worth.

Accept Compliments

A common practice of those suffering from low self-worth is chronically rebuffing any comments directed their way. While you may feel as though you are not worthy of such compliments, people almost always sincerely mean them. So try to train yourself to accept any compliments that you receive, as they are usually always coming from a genuine place. Accepting them, while sometimes uncomfortable, can help to shape the way you choose to think about and view yourself, and radically increase your self worth.

Don’t Compare

It cannot be said enough, comparing yourself to others is one of the worst traps that you can get yourself in. Firstly, we aren’t all meant to be alike, if we were, the world would be a much bleaker place. Acknowledge the fact that, yes, you are different from most people and that is your superpower!

Also, in regards to social media, if you find yourself comparing your life to the lives portrayed online, it must be said that social media is almost always deceiving. If social media has become more of a source of pain than enjoyment, take this as a sign that a much-needed break is in order.

You will find that stepping away from the chaos found online will allow you time to focus on yourself, which is the ultimate when you desperately need to feel your self-worth.

Exercise

According to studies, there is a major correlation between exercise and a feeling of confidence and self-worth. Exercising not only makes your body feel good, but it gives us a feeling of empowerment, especially when we’ve accomplished something that we previously did not think ourselves capable of.

It’s no doubt that exercise is one of the most important forms of self-care there is, which is why we highly recommend it if you are someone who is struggling with feelings of low self-worth. Other forms of self-care include getting an adequate amount of sleep every night and eating nutritious foods, and we recommend both if you want to continue improving your life.

Forgiveness

If you are feeling down due to something that somebody else has done to you, sometimes one of the most powerful things that we can allow ourselves is the feeling of forgiveness. While forgiving is no easy task, the power it has to free us from deteriorating self-worth is almost always worth it. Holding on to feelings of resentment or bitterness will only hinder us in the long run, and continue to keep us stuck in a cycle of negativity.

Help Others

Helping others who are in need is a very productive way to take our minds off of our own negativities and instead focus on being more compassionate to others. It has been said that those who are able to do something that they can be proud of, have an easier time coming to terms with and recognizing their own self-worth.

If your self-worth is lacking, we hope that the advice that we’ve shared can help you get a better understanding of how to manage your negative emotions. Remember that improving yourself is not something that is done overnight, it takes work and we are all more than capable of achieving everything that we deserve.
