5 Ways To Stay Active in Winter

We recommend helpful products in our articles. Read our full disclosure here.

Leading an active lifestyle once the weather gets colder, darker, and gloomier can be increasingly difficult as the winter months progress. With less sunlight and available time to spend outside, our energy and motivation suffer.

During the winter months, many develop seasonal affective disorder which can cause several adverse symptoms such as depression, loss of interest in activities, low energy, poor sleep, changes in weight and appetite, poor concentration, and feelings of hopelessness. A great way to combat these symptoms is through a balanced and active lifestyle – that’s why we’re here, to tell you how to stay active during the colder months!

1. Bundle Up and Get Outside!

It may seem counter-intuitive to go outside when the temperature begins to drop, but maintaining an active lifestyle is much easier when you can still participate in your favorite outdoor activities. On days that are a bit more forgiving, put on a bunch of layers and head outside for a brisk walk, bike ride, or a good run! The best time to participate in outdoor activities during the winter months is usually in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. This is typically the warmest part of the day. The sun and fresh air will leave you feeling invigorated and help reduce some stress.

2. Join a Gym or Health Club

If you aren’t able to get outside much, another great option to stay active and motivated is by utilizing a gym or health club membership. Many gyms give out discounts right after the start of the new year to help you get to work on your New Year’s Wellness Resolutions. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of a good deal!

Many gyms offer classes, great cardio, and weight equipment, and ever a few luxurious extras such as jacuzzies, spray tans, massage rooms to leave you feeling your best and looking great! So, grab a friend, put on your cutest workout outfit, and feel the burn, baby!

3. Work Out at Home

Another fantastic option for maintaining an active lifestyle during the winter is through at-home workouts. There are so many to choose from, with plenty of free options! You can try dancing, Zumba, pilates, and HIIT workouts – the possibilities are endless!

At-home workouts are great for those who like to mix up their workout routine. For extra resistance and burn, you can incorporate various pieces of equipment such as free weights, resistance bands, and heavy bags. A quick, daily workout is an amazing way to stay in shape, stay active, and boost your mood throughout the colder months. For an added bonus, invite friends or family members over for a group sweat sesh!

4. Take Up A Winter Sport

Why not turn up the heat in the cold months by taking on new activity? There are so many great winter sports to choose from that get your blood and your adrenaline pumping!

An even better idea – turn it into a mini-vacation. Take a long weekend and head to a ski or mountain resort. Challenge yourself to try something new and maybe take a snowboarding or skiing lesson. The sports are fun, you get to wear incredibly cute outfits, and you get the chance to burn a few extra calories on the slopes!

Did we mention the ski lodge and spas to be found in many winter resort towns? End your fun-filled, action-packed day with a cocktail or pedicure.

5. Stick With Your Health Routine

It can be so easy to give in to the urge to sit on the couch and eat all of the snacks insight when the weather gets cold, but this will make it much harder to keep up with your active lifestyle. When we become inactive and stop moving, we lose our motivation and energy. This leads to a poor mood and a lack of enthusiasm to stay healthy and active. Instead, try to create more balance!

It’s fine to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and a homemade cookie while you watch your favorite holiday film, but don’t forget to go for a morning walk the next day or head to the gym to crush a booty workout! Maintaining your active lifestyle and creating balance will lead to a more positive outlook and a happier winter mood!

It doesn’t matter how you choose to keep up with your active lifestyle during the colder months, but it is important that you stay moving! This is especially important as we tend to eat more during the winter, whether it is at home or during one of our holiday get-togethers. Maintaining an active lifestyle is incredibly beneficial to your health, mood, and quality of life, don’t let it slip during the colder months when you need it the most!
