How To Prepare To Move: 6 Easy Ways To Make Moving a Positive Experience

We recommend helpful products in our articles. Read our full disclosure here.

Moving is one of the most exciting things that can happen in someone’s life. While moving can be fun, it can also be confusing and exhausting too – especially if you have no clue how to prepare to move.

To take all the negatives out of moving and make it a positive and memorable experience, we are going to share 6 efficient tips that can help.

How To Prepare To Move To Another City or New Home

1. Early organization is essential

When you prepare to move, proper organization is one of the most important things to do. However, no matter how good you are at organizing and planning, it will not work out in your best interest if you do not do it on time.

It is advised that you begin planning your whole moving process a whole month before you move to the new location, and some suggest doing it even sooner.

Prepare to move by involving all kinds of preparation activities such as hiring removalists, putting essential items in “use on arriving” boxes, or folding your clothes.

You also need to consider what items you are going to move to your location and what items you are going to store somewhere or get rid of, as well as organize all deliveries or important events you arranged around the moving date.

2. Inform your movers about your items

If you are planning to hire a moving company, prepare to move smoothly by talking to them about your inventory status.

Something that almost any moving company will be immensely grateful for is if you inform them about the situation of your items. Carrying smaller items into the truck is easy, but when it comes to bigger items, it is good practice to inform your movers on how many and how big are some of the items you are moving.

By doing this, the company will send more people to do the heavy lifting, and your move will go faster. There is going to be a much lower risk of injury as well, and less chance of your items breaking unintentionally.

If you are hiring removalists, make sure to get a truck that is capable of fitting all of your items in a single transport.

3. Use the opportunity to get rid of some items

When you are moving, it is the perfect time to get rid of or declutter some items that you have not been using for a long time, or items that you no longer need. Clothes are usually the biggest offender here, as you probably have numerous pieces of clothing that you forgot about.

The time that you will use to prepare to move can include a little bit of decluttering every day to avoid overwhelm. While packing your clothes, you should not have the “maybe I will wear it once” mindset. This will not only clutter your closet in the future, but it will also take space from other items in the moving vehicle.

Instead, whether it is just clothes or some other items that you forgot about, donate them, or make a yard sale.

4. Prepare to move consciously – use reusable boxes

Even if plastic hardware boxes are the best option for moving, they often do not see much use once you are done moving. Some people have enough space to use them as storage boxes in the attic or the basement, but most people do not have that kind of luxury.

Because of that, it is thoughtful to prepare to move with nature (and your new space) in mind. The best thing to use for moving is good ol’ cardboard boxes. You can easily get a bunch of them if you visit a couple of local grocery stores or hardware stores before you start packing. They would usually throw them away anyway, so you might as well get them for free (instead of paying for the same ones in a hardware store).

5. Label everything

When you prepare to move to a new home, another state, or country, make sure to label every box. Labeling is a huge timesaver! Cardboard boxes are also very easy to label.

It might not seem that important when you are packing, but having everything labeled when you move to a new home is extremely helpful when you are unpacking.

6. Setup utilities before moving in

One of the most important things to do before you move and hire removalists or some other moving company is to make sure that all the utility work is already done at your new home. It can be quite a nightmare to move in, only to keep half of your items packed while there is still work to be done.

Keep an open mind

It’s not easy to prepare to move – the process can be exhausting. However, planning and having enough time can make things a lot easier.

There’s also something that no moving guide will tell you. Next to all of the tips you might have read, on moving day, there is always a chance that something is not going to go according to plan (like old waterproofing suddenly flooding your basement…). In such situations, even if panicking might seem like the first thing to do, staying calm is what is going to get you through. After all, you have been preparing for a move for a long time, and no minor inconvenience can ruin your experience.
