Deep-cleaned, fluffy towels

How To Deep Clean Towels

We recommend helpful products in our articles. Read our full disclosure here.

Keeping your towels fresh, fluffy, and absorbent sometimes means more than regular washing. Over time, towels can accumulate detergent residue, body oils, and odors that regular laundering might not remove.

Deep cleaning your towels can rejuvenate them and restore their original softness and absorbency. Here’s how to do it!

Step-by-Step Guide to Deep Cleaning Towels

1. Preparation

Gather Your Supplies

You will need white vinegar, baking soda, and your usual laundry detergent.

Sort Your Towels

Separate towels by color to avoid any dye transfer during washing.

2. Vinegar Wash

Run your towels through a hot wash cycle with one cup of white vinegar, substituting it for your regular detergent. Vinegar helps break down the buildup of detergents and body oils, and it can also neutralize odors, leaving your towels fresher.

3. Baking Soda Wash

After the vinegar cycle, wash the towels again in a hot cycle with a half-cup of baking soda. This step not only cleans your towels further but also softens the fabric and eliminates any lingering odors.

4. Double Rinse and Dry

If possible, use an extra rinse cycle to ensure all traces of vinegar and baking soda are washed out. Dry your towels on the highest heat setting or hang them to dry in the sun for added freshness and a natural antibacterial effect. Make sure they are completely dry to prevent mildew growth.

Maintenance Tips

  • Between deep cleans, avoid using too much fabric softeners as they can coat the fibers and reduce towel absorbency. Instead, add a half-cup of vinegar to your regular wash every few weeks to maintain freshness.
  • Always store your towels in a dry, well-ventilated area to keep them smelling fresh.

Conclusion

Periodically deep cleaning your towels can improve their texture and functionality, making your post-shower experience more delightful. Follow these simple steps, and your towels will stay as welcoming and cozy as they were when you first bought them!

  • You do not mention using my regular detergent in the second wash. But it says in the gather your supplies section that you need your regular detergent. I assume you use detergent in addition to the baking soda in the second wash. Is that correct?
In the first wash (the vinegar wash) it says to use the vinegar in place of your detergent but it doesn’t say that in the second wash.
