Dysport and Botox have become very popular throughout the world. It’s unsurprising to see beauty spots (like one of our Brooklyn faves byoulaserclinic) constantly filled with people ready to try botulin toxin injections. These neuromodulators are injected into the body to treat many conditions like hyperhidrosis or severe underarm sweating, blepharospasm or severe blinking, cervical dystonia, overactive bladder, strabismus where the eyes look in different directions, muscle spasms in the shoulder, and even chronic migraine.

However, the most common application of these cosmetic injections is in treating facial creases and wrinkles. Approved by the FDA in 2002, Botox treatments are prevalent in all US. You will find many clinics offering facial treatment with Botox in NYC and other parts of the country.

What is Botox?

Botox is very useful for preventing and treating wrinkle formation on the face. They are formed because of continuous muscle contractions. A microbe produces the onobotulinumtoxin – a toxin in Botox. It can paralyze the muscles temporarily, thereby preventing them from moving and minimizing the process of skin wrinkling.

Botox was the first injectable product that used this toxin, which is why you will hear a lot about it. There are other products now, like Myobloc, Dysport, and Xeomin. They are all safe and non-surgical, but they all work a bit differently.

How Does Botox Work On the Face?

Technicians develop the toxin for medical and cosmetic procedures in a laboratory. They will first dilute and then sterilize it so that the toxin cannot cause botulism, which can cause a serious disorder in the nervous system. You must get injected only by a trained and licensed person.

Botox Procedure

The professional will rub an anesthetic product on the area. This will numb it. The Botox injection will be administered to a particular facial muscle. Dysport works over a larger area, but Botox is more precise.

The chemical will start working. It will block the nerve transmission, which will effectively freeze the area. Your brain may still signal the body and ask it to move the muscle, but Botox will effectively block this and won’t allow it to move. As a result, the muscle cannot contract anymore.  The wrinkles, as a result, will soften and become relaxed. The process will also prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

You can start seeing results in only 72 hours. However, it will slowly begin to wane off, which happens with all such treatments, not just Botox. You will need a follow-up injection anytime between 3 and 6 months, which is longer than most other treatments.

The Effect Must Remain Localized

The effects of Botox treatments should be localized only to the area where it is injected – it won’t spread throughout your body. It may travel up to 3 centimeters maximum. The administered cosmetic dose is significantly lower than the medicine’s toxic dose. So even if it travels further, it won’t cause any harm to your body.

It Won’t Make Your Area Feel Numb

Though Botox will paralyze your facial muscles, the affected areas won’t feel completely numb. Your body has two different nerve types. One gives you feelings, and the other is responsible for motion. Botox will only block the synapses of the nerve that provides motion.

Take a few precautions before you get the beauty treatment. For example, you must avoid drinking alcohol for seven days before the procedure. Also, don’t take any anti-inflammatory medication or aspirin for two weeks before you inject Botox. This will prevent bruising.

There is some aftercare as well. Remember not to rub the injection points for at least 12 hours. If you do, it will spread to other areas, which is not good because Botox treatment is very specific for particular muscles. Also, remember not to lie down for 3-4 hours after the injection. Avoid physical exertion for a day.

Make sure to report any reactions. Best, ask the person who administered the Botox about all activities you must avoid immediately after the procedure. Always follow the person’s advice.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

The per-unit average cost of Botox in NYC is between $10 and $20, which means it will be anywhere between $250 and $500 for each treatment area. The precise cost depends on the number of Botox units required for treating the area. Only an expert can tell you how much Botox you need to get the desired effect.

Does Getting Botox Hurt?

A Botox needle is very small. There should be no pain at the injection site, particularly when a topical cream is applied. The pain will be minimal even if no numbing agent is applied. You may only feel a slight pinch. The injection will be so quick that you may not even notice it.

If it hurts, it could possibly be from a rare side effect. Always report it to the administrator.

You may see a small bump at the injection site, much like a mosquito bite. There is nothing to worry about because the bump will fade off quickly.

What Facial Areas Can Be Injected With Botox?

  • Forehead wrinkles – to treat the horizontal creases at the top of your face that move with expressions.
  • Crow’s feet – small lines at the corner of the eyes that appear when we laugh and smile. Botox injections can ease these laugh lines and make you look more youthful.
  • Frown lines – these are lines on the forehead between your eyebrows. They appear when we furrow our brows and frown. They make us look angry, upset, and tired.
  • Bunny lines are present on both sides of your nose. A Botox shot will ease these lines efficiently.
  • Smoker’s lines – even non-smokers have these lines. They appear when you purse your lips.
  • Mouth corners – also called the marionette lines – extend from the corners of your mouth to the jaw. A small Botox amount can correct them.
  • Neckbands – neck cords of bands show in the neck as we age because the muscles in the region will sag with time.
  • Sagging eyebrows – botox is very effective in lifting the brows. It does this by relaxing the muscles in the area.
  • Jawline botox for jaw can help relax jaw muscles, thus making the jaw appear narrower.

What Is the Right Age for Botox Therapy?

Botox cosmetic injections are approved for everyone above the age of 18 years. Usually, women between 35 and 65 years of age get the treatment. However, in recent times, many men and younger people are also using these services as a prevention.

Thankfully, Botox is FDA-approved and is safe. People worldwide are getting Botox treatments to remove their facial wrinkles and look younger, which seems to work well.
