Are Store-Bought Lip Scrubs Better Than Homemade?

We recommend helpful products in our articles. Read our full disclosure here.

I must confess – I’m a huge fan of lip scrubs. They feel so good to use before applying lipsticks and they’re certainly a lifesaver when my lips get dry and cracked. It may sound silly, but sometimes a few minutes of scrubbing your lips and applying some fancy lip balm is just what a girl needs to recalibrate and start her day again.

I’ve tried so many lip scrubs in my life – store-bought, homemade, acid-based, srub-mask type – you name it! So, if you’re wondering if that honey and sugar paste is better than a $30 lip scrub from Sephora, I’m ready to tell you the truth.

Now, let me just say that both store-bought and homemade lip scrubs are usually quite similar. The most popular kinds of lip scrubs have a granulated form of exfoliant (usually – sugar), both in DIY recipes and store-bought scrubs.

Basically, this scrubbing power is what actually makes the lip scrubs so effective and pleasant to use.  So are they the same? It depends on what you want from your lip scrub!

If you’re looking for lip scrubs that just get the job of removing dryness and flakiness done, a DIY lip scrub will do it just fine.

But if you’d like your lip scrubbing session to be a fun, gorgeously pleasant, and fragrant experience – a store-bought lip scrub is really worth investing in. It’s just something really magical about scooping a little bit of raspberry, marmalade, orange blossom, or vanilla-infused paste (kind of like a real berry marmalade!) and scrubbing all of your problems away (not literally, of course, unless you have a really big dry lip problem!).

Additionally, store-bought lip scrubs usually include extra ingredients that can help to exfoliate your lips even better + make them plump, rosy, and soft for longer.

So are store-bought lip scrubs better?

I would say – yes, they’re usually better because not only do they get the job done, but they also make lip scrubbing experience a nice break in our busy life!

My favorite lip scrubs

My absolute favorite lip scrubs are the ones that feel like a berry or fruit jam – and they smell so good! Here are a few I recommend the most:pink grapefruit lip scrubsara happ The Lip Scrub, Pink Grapefruit

Can you use your regular body scrub as a lip scrub?

Honestly, it depends. If it’s an all-natural scrub made of oil and sugar, without harsh chemicals, it might be okay to use it on your lips too. However, it’s usually not the case and regular body scrub can be way too harsh on your lips or even result in allergies or a rash. I’d rather stick with a DIY lip scrub or store-bought lip scrub.

Lip scrub aftercare

When you use a lip scrub of any kind, it’s important to hydrate your lips after. Don’t forget to apply a lip balm or some vaseline to bring moisture back and keep that beautiful pout moisturized. A hydrating lip gloss can work as well!

And that’s it! I hope you liked this little overview of store-bought lip scrubs VS homemade ones. When it comes to skincare, it all comes down to your unique needs and preferences… Yet there are some things that all of us women love – nice smells, pleasant textures, and fun experiences. A good store-bought lip scrub can really offer all of that at once.
